Brie was full of heart. Everything she did was with enthusiasm. She loved her mom. Did not think highly of boys, except Freddie. She loved to eat, her morning walk, and pool time. Brie was a gift to those that knew her.

Brie’s time with us was short. She was rescued early February 2025 (https://tumbleweedanimalsanctuary.org/welcome-brie/), and passed October 4th, 2025. Over the past few months, Brie’s limp returned. On September 23rd, 2025, (our second trip to WSU) a physical exam found a cyst on her right knee. A needle aspirate revealed liquid consistent with joint fluid. X-rays confirmed degenerative joint disease in both of her knees. The vet sent the fluid to cytology to see if she had cancer, and for culturing to see if she had an infection. Both results came back negative. The vet told us we could not fix the knee with surgery, and it might do more harm. Our only option was to keep Brie comfortable with pain medication.

We were hopeful that draining the cyst would provide Brie relief, enabling her to enjoy a few more months with her family and friends. Brie only felt better for a few hours. Over the course of the next 11 days, Brie’s pain worsened and ultimately had very limited use of her leg. Walking was difficult for Brie, and she had a hard time sitting her last 2 days.
Brie’s last day was filled with 2 breakfasts, watermelon, lettuce and cucumbers. She spent time in her pool, and with Freddie and her human family. After a local vet helped her pass, we brought her back home and put her to rest in our native plant / memorial garden, alongside Sally Sue (died August 2024) and Florence (died May 2025).
Brie was a very special duck. She left the feeling of joy in all those she met. Brie had a very special bond with her mom, Jennifer. She went to her mom whenever she needed comfort, wanted to get away from the stinky boys, and just to hang out. Their relationship was unique and will be cherished. Brie will be missed beyond words.
